First Steps to a Healthy Detox

The human body is amazing. It has the ability to sustain and produce life, to ward off disease and to heal just about any ailment it is faced with! Today our bodies are facing a problem relatively new to our species, and that problem is toxins.

What are toxins? Well mostly they are man-made chemicals. We are exposed to them in the air we breathe, in our cosmetics, our cleaning products, and in our food just to name a few. Luckily for us our bodies have the amazing ability to heal and to detoxify, but for many of us the level of toxic exposure we are all faced with each day has been rising much faster than our bodies can keep up with. It gets to a point where we become overloaded, our detox pathways become blocked, and we start to exhibit symptoms such as eczema, acne, headaches, fatigue, gastrointestinal issues, low functioning immune systems, and fertility issues.

The level of toxins and the health of our bodies cannot only affect our ability to get and stay pregnant, it can also affect the life of our babies. In 2005 the EWG (Environmental Working Group) conducted a study of the umbilical cord blood of 10 infants. In those 10 umbilical cords, two separate labs detected 287 different chemicals! Many of the chemicals found are linked to cancers, problems with the development of the brain and nervous system, and various birth defects.

This is more than concerning but the good news is we can hugely impact the type and amount of chemicals our babies are exposed to by changing our cleaning products, our personal products, and most importantly our food! The best part is, as you clean up your diet and home for your someday baby, you will also be making your own body healthier and drastically improving your fertility! Funny how that works!

Detox

1) Drink Clean Water-Drinking at least 8 full glasses of filtered water each day will help you stay hydrated and also help your body flush out toxins. (For extra detox drink a tall glass of warm to hot water with freshly squeezed lemon juice in the morning. This helps to re-hydrate the system and promotes good digestion.

2) Make sure you are having bowel movements daily-This is the number one way your body gets rid of unwanted byproducts! A well-functioning digestive system is also imperative to your fertility. (Need help in this area? Try the morning lemon water mentioned above!)

3) Exfoliate-Skin brushing and sugar scrubs can help exfoliate the skin, clear dead skin away, and increase blood circulation.

4) Exercise- Regular exercise helps with blood circulation, digestion, and strengthens the body. We also get rid of toxins via sweating.

5) Get good sleep-Your body does most of its recovery while you sleep. It helps the body repair from stress, pollutants, and infection. Around 7-8 hours of quality sleep is best to help your body regenerate and detoxify.

In just a few short steps you can drastically reduce the toxic load on your body, improving your fertility and your baby?s health even if he or she is still just a twinkle in your eye! Try to tackle just one new habit a week and you will be noticing a huge difference in your health in no time!
