Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I receive acupuncture, and for how long?

We generally encourage patients to receive acupuncture weekly, at least at the beginning of your care with us, although different treatment plans may be developed or recommended depending on your situation. While powerful changes can sometimes occur with 1-2 treatments, acupuncture generally has a cumulative affect and is meant to be done regularly for a few months in order to receive optimal benefits.

Do you take insurance?

Fertile Ground is not a preferred provider for any of the major insurance networks. If your plan covers acupuncture appropriate forms can be submitted and you will be reimbursed directly.

I have never done acupuncture before because I’m scared of needles. Is Acupuncture painful?

We are experienced at working with patients who are nervous about receiving acupuncture or who are very sensitive to needling. We adjust our needling technique to your unique needs to ensure that the experience is as comfortable as possible. Patients are generally pleasantly surprised to discover how comfortable and relaxing the whole experience is. Also, acupuncture needles are very fine and thin. Treatment is nothing like getting a shot or having your blood drawn. However, if acupuncture is not right for you we can offer immense therapeutic benefits by utilizing our other modalities, including Maya Abdominal Therapy, shiatsu and massage, cupping, moxibustion, herbal and dietary therapy.

What is a treatment like?

The intake process involves asking you questions about your health and lifestyle, palpation (including your pulse), and examination of your tongue. While you are resting on a massage table your practitioner inserts hair-thin needles in various acupuncture points throughout the body and lets your rest comfortably for about 25 minutes. Patients often relax deeply and sometimes take a nap.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

You do not need to wear any special clothing. Please don't eat a large meal just before or after your visit, but please do not arrive with an empty stomach either. It is important to have eaten something within 2-3 hours before treatment. Do not overexert yourself or drink alcohol before or after your treatment.

How much should I expect to spend on herbal therapy?

Herbs cost $15-30/week depending on whether we prescribe tablets or powdered formulas. Patients can help decide what the best herbal treatment option is for them.
